Canada Takes Second Game of Celebration Tour Against Netherlands
Oshawa, Ont. – The Canadian Women’s National Team won their second consecutive game against the Netherlands Friday evening. A big crowd braced the blustery conditions at the Durham Lords’ Softball Field as they saw Canada win by a score of 9-2.
After a scoreless first frame, Canada erupted for four runs in the second inning with an RBI groundout by Kelsey Lalor (Red Deere, Alta.) and a run-scoring single from Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.), followed immediately with a two-run home run off the bat of Kelsey Harshman (Delta, B.C.).
After the Netherlands got one run back on an RBI double by Charlotte Drijvers in the bottom of the second, Canada pushed two more runs across in the top of the fourth, both coming with two outs in the inning. Franklin started the rally with a two-out single, followed by an RBI double from Harshman and an RBI single from Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.). Canada’s bats stayed hot in the fifth inning as a single and a walk put a runner in scoring position for Grace Messmer (Surrey, B.C.), who delivered with a two-out, RBI single. Harshman capped off her huge night with another homerun to lead off the top of the sixth and an RBI double in the top of the seventh.

On the game, Team Canada tallied 11 hits. Harshman led the way offensively for Canada going 4-for-4 at the plate while notching two home runs and two doubles to go along with five runs batted in. Franklin and Kianna Jones (Surrey, B.C.) each had two hits, with Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ont.) adding a double and Polidori and Messmer each registering an RBI single.
Sam Ryan (Monroe, N.Y.) picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle after only allowing one run on one hit in three and a third innings for work, striking out five batters. Nicola Simpson (Seattle, Wash.) was again efficient in the circle striking out three batters in her one and two third innings of relief. Jorde Chartrand (Weyburn, Sask.) closed out the game for Canada allowing two hits and an unearned run in two innings of relief.
Canada will wrap up their Ontario Celebration Tour series with the Netherlands today with a doubleheader at the Old Fairgrounds in Brampton, Ont. Game one will start at 12:00pm with game two starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
