Position Overview
Wheelchair Rugby Canada is seeking a dynamic Head Coach to lead the National Team and shape the future of high-performance wheelchair rugby in Canada. This role requires:
- Expertise in coaching elite athletes.
- Tactical game planning.
- Team management.
The successful candidate will develop, implement, and execute training programs and competition strategies while fostering a strong team culture.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and Lead the Canadian National Wheelchair Rugby Team
- Establish clear goals for training camps and competitions.
- Develop technical/tactical practice and game plans.
- Lead all training sessions and game coaching.
- Conduct video analysis, team meetings, and debrief discussions.
- Collaborate with Integrated Support Staff (IST) on logistics like travel, rest, and nutrition.
Opposition Scouting
- Analyze video and stats of opponents.
- Develop game plans to counter opposition strengths and exploit weaknesses.
- Prepare reports for athlete review.
Team Selection
- Assist in developing team selection criteria.
- Assess athlete skills using the Gold Medal Profile (GMP).
- Conduct gap analysis and adapt training programs accordingly.
- Communicate selection decisions clearly.
Athlete Monitoring
- Develop Individual Performance Plans (IPP) based on the Yearly Training Plan (YTP).
- Coordinate athlete services (strength, conditioning, mental preparation).
- Assess athlete progression and maintain ongoing communication.
High-Performance Program Planning
- Contribute to Quadrennial Program Plans and funding applications.
- Set program goals for competitions.
- Develop a detailed YTP and collaborate with IST staff.
Talent Identification
- Maintain communication with club and provincial coaches.
- Attend domestic tournaments to identify talent.
- Follow up with identified athletes for development opportunities.
Professional Development
- Pursue professional growth opportunities.
- Build a network of sport leaders.
- Support the development of the wheelchair rugby community.
Requirements and Skills

Certification:
- National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) – Competition Development or equivalent.
- Safe Sport Trained (or equivalent).

Experience & Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of the Canadian sport system.
- In-depth knowledge of wheelchair rugby.
- Proven leadership in elite sport environments.

Skills:
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and video analysis tools.
- Valid driver’s license.

Additional Requirements:
- Flexible working hours (evenings, weekends).
- Frequent travel within Canada and internationally.
