About Own the Podium:

Own the Podium (OTP) is a non-profit organization that provides technical support to National Sport Organizations (NSOs) with the aim of delivering Olympic and Paralympic medals for Canada. OTP makes investment recommendations to national funding partners using an evidence based, expert driven, targeted and collaborative approach.

CPC/OTP Partnership

This position is  made possible through a two–year partnership between CPC and OTP. The oversight of the partnership will be done through a CPC/OTP Joint Operational Framework, which includes a Management Group, Advisory Committee and individuals with direct oversight of the role.  The CPC/OTP Joint Operational Framework is in place to ensure alignment between the OTP Podium Pathway Strategy as well as ensuring full integration with the CPC Paralympic Performance and Pathway work inclusive of Athlete ID, Transfer and Classification. The Management group and the Advisory Committee will be comprised of OTP and CPC representatives.

Scope of Position

The position’s central mandate is to provide expertise, assistance and leadership to Paralympic sports in the ongoing implementation and assessment of an integrated sport science and sport medicine program. The position will report to the Lead Advisor of Sport Science & Sport Medicine (SSSM) (OTP). The role will also have direct accountabilities to  Director, Paralympic Performance and Pathway (CPC).  Day to day oversight will be the responsibility of the Lead Advisor SSSM.  It will also work collaboratively with the Directors of Summer Sport and Winter Sport (OTP), OTP High Performance Advisors, CPC Paralympic Performance Team, and the Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Olympic Sport Institute (COPSI) Network.

The ideal candidate will have extensive applied experience and success in sport science and sport medicine programming along with significant experience in leadership positions in Canadian or international sport systems. The successful candidate will have worked successfully and extensively within the Paralympic sport environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Work directly with targeted Paralympic sports and OTP High Performance Advisors (HPA’s) to ensure that Paralympic sports have an integrated sport science and sport medicine (SS/SM) plan and well-constructed and functioning SS/SM Integrated Support Teams (IST’s).
  • Work collaboratively with the COPSI Network to develop expertise and awareness of Paralympic SS/SM research and performance trends.
  • Provide expertise and mentoring to Paralympic sports in the areas of sport science, sport medicine, and the planning and periodization of training.
  • Provide CPC with at-Games expertise and guidance regarding effective deployment and management of SS/SM services.
  • Work with the OTP Lead SS/SM Advisor to promote the development of a strong network of SS/SM professionals with both the COPSI Network and external SS/SM providers.
  • Participate as a member in the National Sport Science, Medicine Advisory (NSSMAC) Committee.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University graduate degree in a sport science field.
  • Extensive applied experience (3-5years) and success in sport science and sport medicine programming along with experience (3-5years) in leadership positions in Canadian or international sport systems.
  • Previous experience working at a multi-sport organization is an asset.
  • Significant successful experience in the design and implementation of SS/SM services to high performance athletes in preparation for performance success at Paralympic Games.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of the MS Office Suite is required.
  • Bilingualism is a preferred asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Overnight travel and offsite work may be required.
  • Will be required to work evenings and weekends during busy periods, including Games and other special events.
