Bowls Canada – Four promising Canadian bowlers have landed in Queensland, Australia to compete in the 2017 World Youth Championships from March 27th to April 2nd.

Lucas Caldwell, Peterborough, ON; Nicole LeBlanc, Uxbridge, ON; Pricilla Westlake, Delta, BC and Rob Law, Winnipeg, MB will compete against top youth bowlers from around the globe at the 2018 Commonwealth Games venue: the Broadbeach Bowls Club.

The World Youth Championships, formerly the World Junior Championships, are an annual outdoor event featuring men’s and women’s singles and mixed pairs.

Westlake and Caldwell, winners of the 2016 Canadian Under 25 Championships, will pair up for the Mixed Pairs portion of the event, while LeBlanc and Law will join forces in the other team.

This will be Westlake’s third consecutive appearance at this event, while the others are eager to showcase their skills in their debut.

When asked how he has prepared for the event Law said, “My preparation so far has consisted of bowling at an indoor facility, going to the gym three to four times a week, and talking with a sport psychologist. I feel confident that I am putting my best self forward for this event.”

Although it is the first time at this event for three of the competitors, it is not their first time representing Canada internationally. All four competed in the North American Challenge against the United States in October at the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club in Vancouver, British Columbia, where Canada took home six of the seven trophies.

Caldwell, Law and LeBlanc, members of BCB’s Development Squad, will not only look to veteran Westlake for guidance, but also to their coach.

Darryl Fitzgerald of Waterloo, ON, was named as Canada’s 2017 World Youth Championship coach, making his second trip to Broadbeach in as many years.

“The World Youth Championship is an amazing event and opportunity for all developing young bowlers,” said Fitzgerald. “I am excited to be going for a second year to help four young athletes from Canada challenge themselves against the top young bowlers from around the world.”

Round Robin play will commence on Monday March 27th and conclude on Friday March 31st.  The Men’s and Women’s Singles and Mixed Pairs playoffs are set for Saturday April 1st with the finals on Sunday April 2nd, 2017.
