Diving Plongeon Canada –  Chalk it up to experience.

As two of the younger athletes in the field, Victoria’s Bryden Hattie and Rylan Wiens, from Saskatoon, Sask., made it through to the final, and then finished 11th in the men’s 10m synchro platform on Friday at the FINA Diving World Cup, in Wuhan, China.

The 16 year-old divers scored 349.50 points in the final, which was won by China’s Aisen Chen and Hao Yang who picked up 491.73 points.

“I had a goal of being within a certain amount of vertical every dive and so far it’s been good,” said Wiens, “I mean nothing was really awesome but it was all pretty decent so I’m happy with that.”

The Canadians were ranked eighth after the morning preliminary, to advance to the final.

“I think it was a great experience,” said Hattie, who did admit to feeling the tiring effects of travel but filed away some learning for next time.

His strategy may shift, “Probably to not put as much stress on and just to go with the flow more,” said Hattie, “Just kind of take a deep breath and go with the event.”

It went relatively smoothly for the Canadians in the women’s 3m springboard preliminary.

Jennifer Abel, of Laval, Que., and Montreal’s Pamela Ware both advanced to Saturday’s semifinal.

Also Saturday, Wiens will join Olympian Vincent Riendeau, of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the men’s 10m platform preliminary.

Wiens said today’s synchro event prepared him for the individual.

“I think it’s definitely a nice warm-up, tomorrow it’s going to be a lot different but I’m going to try to have the same mindset, same goals and see if I can do the same thing,” said Wiens.

Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu, of St. Constant, Que., and François Imbeau-Dulac, of Saint-Lazare, Que., will round out the Canadians in action on Saturday, by diving in the mixed 3m synchro springboard event.
