Water Polo Canada – (OTTAWA, November 15, 2016) – Water Polo Canada is proud to announce the hiring of another one of Europe’s leading club coaches, Haris (Theocharis) Pavlides, formerly from Olympiacos and Glyfada, in Greece, to guide its senior women’s team program. This announcement is the result of an extensive selection process and follows the October inclusion of Italian coaching star Pino Porzio within the Canadian national waterpolo federation’s high performance structure.

Haris Pavlides, who got started as Head Coach with ANC Glyfada in 2004 and later moved to the helm of famed Olympiacos from 2007 to 2015, has a proven ability to foster exceptional team environments and to initiate lasting results within short time frames.

Within two seasons with Olympiacos, Pavlides had led the squad to its first National Championship in 2009, 11 years after the team had earned its last title. Continued success ensued for the club and, in addition to harvesting numerous prestigious championships in the following years, Pavlides and his players had a truly historical year in 2015.

Under its leadership and expertise, the storied Greek club first won the 2015 Euroleague and National Championship. This exceptional year was then topped by the capture of the LEN European Super Cup in November 2015, earning Olympiacos the coveted Triple Crown for 2015. The club also snatched up every single championships in the U19, U17, U15 and U13 Youth Girls’ categories, further showing the strength of the system Pavlides and his colleagues had been able to put in place.

Haris Pavlides also enjoyed a decorated athletic career himself through most of the 80s and 90s and was greatly influenced by the legendary waterpolo coach Nikola Stamenic, who later served as a mentor. Always looking to develop and push the boundaries of his coaching skills, Pavlides has previously been courted by international organizations and has chosen to make the leap with Water Polo Canada.

The new coaching contract is effective immediately and Coach Pavlides will be in attendance in Montreal, alongside National Training Centre Lead Coach David Paradelo, for the women’s first camp of the new season in November. Pavlides will retain a homebase in Europe and a relationship with Olympiacos for the next 2 years while the Canadian program is in a semi-centralized training format. Expectations are then for an eventual relocation to Montreal to keep up with the intensity of the last two years of the Olympic quadrennial.

“With the hiring of Haris Pavlides, we consolidate our pool of expertise in a big way and feel that this marks a turning point for our senior women’s program,” said High Performance Director, Justin Oliveira. “Coach Pavlides is ideally suited to raise our level of knowledge and experience while enhancing our technical & tactical skills for the team. He will be an integral part in developing our Canadian athletes and national team coaches to regain our rightful place in the world stage in women’s water polo. We are looking forward to showcasing noticeable progress while advancing on our path toward Tokyo 2020,” he said.
