Baseball Canada – OTTAWA- A silver medal performance earlier this month in Korea at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup has moved Canada up to #2 in the world as the international baseball governing body, the World Baseball Softball Confederation, released it’s rankings today.

“The newly updated rankings reflect the final standings and over 100 international matches of the Women’s Baseball World Cup, dating back to 2012,” said the WBSC in a press release.

The #2 ranking represents an all-time high for the Women’s National Team besting a #3 ranking that was previously held from 2012 to 2014 and up two sports from #4 when the 2014 rankings were released.

“This is certainly great news for women’s baseball in our country,” said Women’s National Team Manager André Lachance. “We had a great group of players this year (in Korea) who worked hard for one another and carried that forward into team success. The credit for the silver medal and the ranking goes to them and the others who contributed to our success over the past four years.”

After winning bronze on home soil in 2012, Canada finished fourth at the 2014 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup, before going on a run to the gold medal game at this year’s event before falling to world #1 ranked Japan.

The Women’s National Team program will begin preparations for the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup in the summer of 2017.
