Women’s National Softball Teams Ready to Compete at Canada Cup
Softball Canada – (Surrey, B.C.) Fresh off a bronze-medal finish at the US World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma City last week, the Women’s National Team will begin its Canada Cup schedule against the Philippines at 6:00pm PDT tonight at Softball City. The Canadian Women’s Elite team and the Junior Women’s National Team are also competing at the event, with both registering wins in their opening game.
The Canada Cup features a total of 15 teams divided into four pools, including nine Women’s National Teams and six other teams. International-level teams include No. 1 Japan, No. 3 Canada, No. 4 Australia, No. 7 Puerto Rico, No. 9 Chinese Taipei, No. 10 Mexico, No. 16 Venezuela, No. 17 Philippines and No. 38 Pakistan. The clubs rounding out the tournament are the Canadian Junior Women’s National Team and Women’s Elite Teams, as well as the NJCAA National Team, the Quebec Rebelles, the Calahoo Erins and U21 Team BC.
The top two teams from each opening round pool will advance to the championship round-robin in the second round, while the other teams will be placed in a placement pool round-robin. Following the second round, the top two teams from each of the two championship round-robin sections will earn double life in the playoff round, with the bottom two teams of each section earning single life.
Following the completion of the Canada Cup, the Women’s National Team will take a short break before regrouping in Oakville, Ont. for training prior to travelling to Akron, Ohio for a two-game exhibition series with the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) League. The team will then travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to compete in the WBSC Americas Pan American Women’s Softball Championship from August 4-13. Canada will also compete in the Japan Cup from August 25-28.
The Junior Women’s National team will compete in the WBSC Junior Women’s World Softball Championship July 24-30 in Clearwater, Florida.
