Canada Basketball – TORONTO, ON (March 21, 2017) – 50 athletes from across the country have been invited to participate in the Women’s National Age-Group Assessment Camps at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (Scarborough, ON) from March 27-April 1, 2017.

“We look forward to further assessing progress of nationally identified NextGen athletes and see them compete, as well as provide direction on their individual performance plans as we prepare for this summer’s U17 and U18 women’s national teams,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance.

“We are excited to gather coaches, technical leaders, mentors, performance analysts and IST staff from across the country, all of whom are committed to the long-term development of NextGen athletes in our Podium Pathway.  This is an amazing development opportunity for all involved,” Dignard said.

The objective of the camp is to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes born in 2000 and later. At the camp, national team coaches, sports scientists and technical staff will identify athletes who will be invited to the next stage of the 2018 age-group programs.

Athletes born 2000 or later will be assessed for their participation in the U18 team, competing at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship. Last summer, the team earned a bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2017 in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy.

Athletes born 2001 or later will be assessed for participation in the U17 team, which will compete this summer at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Minsk, Belarus from July 21-29. Last summer, the team placed second at the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2017, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Canada is currently ranked 4th overall in the FIBA women’s age-group rankings.
