This event has been designated as an official qualifying tournament for the 2017 20U FINA World Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary, in July 2017.

The 2016 UANA Junior Water Polo Pan American Championships tournament is expecting to have 16 participating teams with 5 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams receiving qualifying spots for the 20U FINA World Championships in 2017.

“Edmonton is proud to host the 2016 UANA Junior Water Polo Pan American Championships,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “With a reputation for hosting exceptional sporting events, combined with our enthusiastic fans and our volunteer spirit, I’m confident this competition will be an enormous success.”

Working closely with partners including Edmonton Events (a partnership between the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Tourism), Water Polo Canada was able to secure the Junior Pan American Championships. The event is also funded in part by the Government of Canada through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate Water Polo Canada and the City of Edmonton on hosting the 2016 UANA Junior Water Polo Pan American Championships in the City of Champions,” said the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. “Supporting the hosting of high-calibre international sport events like these championships is important to the Government of Canada, as it will give our young athletes the opportunity to compete against the world’s best, at home in front of enthusiastic Canadian fans.”

The last time the Junior Pan American Championships was hosted in Canada was in Montreal in August

of 2012. Other UANA events hosted by WPC have been the UANA Cup in 2011 (Victoria), 2013 (Calgary) and 2015 (Markham).

In the 2014 UANA Junior Water Polo Pan American Championships, in Riverside, California, Canada was able to capture the bronze medal in both women’s and men’s division, over Puerto Rico and Argentina respectively.

“The Junior Pan American Championships are a fantastic showcase for the next generation of our national teams,” said Martin Goulet, Water Polo Canada’s executive director. “We are beyond excited to have felt such great support and welcome so far in the planning of this event. This will certainly allow our young men and women to compete in a high quality event, in front of Canadian families and fans,” he said.
