Volleyball Canada  – May 12, 2016: The 2016 Volleyball Canada Championships continue in Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Waterloo, Ontario, this weekend.

A total of 915 teams are registered in all the Championship events throughout the month of May. This coming weekend will see 35 17U boys’ and 43 18U boys’ teams in Saskatoon; 22 boys’ and 84 girls’ teams in Waterloo for the 15U East event, and 30 boys and 56 girls’ teams in Winnipeg for the 14U West tournament.

“It was a busy and exciting first weekend and we hope that momentum continues in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan this weekend,” said Sandra de Graaff, Volleyball Canada’s Director of Domestic Competition. “We wish all the participants the best of luck, and thanks again to all our partners and sponsors for joining us this year at the VC Championships.”

Last weekend, the 14U Championship (Atlantic and East) were held in Halifax and Ottawa respectively, while Edmonton hosted at true national championships for 17/18 U girls at the Saville Community Sports Centre, May 5 to 8.  Volleyball Canada donated $10,000 from the Edmonton event gate to the Canadian Red Cross, and the volleyball community pulled together to support the teams attending from the evacuated areas.

“It was truly inspirational that the Fort Mac Thunder competed and medalled at the tournament in Edmonton this past weekend. Our thoughts are with them and their families through this crisis,” said de Graaff.

Unlike 2015, which was a year that the Volleyball Canada Championship was held in one city, this year and 2017 will see the youth tournaments in various locations across the country.  All host cities went through a bidding process, and were chosen for meeting the criteria set out by Volleyball Canada.  In 2018, Edmonton will host the next Championship to be held in one location.
