Canadian Fencing Federation – It was the first day of competition yesterday at the 2016 Pan Am Fencing Championships in Panama with Men’s Foil and Women’s Epee in action.

Maximilien Van Haaster (Montreal, QC) had Canada’s top result finishing 5th in Individual Men’s Foil.  Van Haaster, finished with a 4 wins and 1 loss record after poules, earning a direct berth to the 64’s.  Van Haaster defeated Mexico’s Jesus Beltran a resounding 15-5 in the 32’s, followed by a win against Brazil’s Henrique Marques 15-10 in the 16’s.  Van Haaster’s day came to a stop in the quarter-finals when he faced top American Miles Chamley-Watson and lost 15-11, to give him a fifth place finish overall.

Marc Antoine Brodeur (Boucherville, QC) finished in 16th while junior-aged Mikhail (Misha) Sweet (Winnipeg, Manitoba) came in 22nd in his first Senior Pan Am Championships.

It was a tough day of competition in Women’s Epee with Brittany Mark-Larkin (Ile Bizard, QC) forced to withdraw due to illness, and Malinka  Hoppe Montanaro (Montreal, QC) suffering an ankle injury prior to competition.  Canada’s top finishers in Individual Women’s Epee were Vanessa Lacas-Warrick (Markham, ON) who finished 11th and Leonora MacKinnon (Canadian living in England) in 12th place. Malinka Hoppe Montanaro finished in 18th place overall.
