U SPORTS Athletes of the Week (#12): UNB’s Masters, Dalhousie’s Sarty honoured
U SPORTS TORONTO

TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Javon Masters of the UNB Varsity Reds and Dalhousie’s Isabel Sarty are the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending November 19, 2017.
A fifth-year arts student from Kitchener, Ont., Masters became the AUS all-time career points leader this past weekend—breaking the existing record of 2,069 career points set in 1996 by former UPEI Panthers standout Curtis Robinson. The Varsity Reds were hosted by the Saint Mary’s Huskies in two weekend games Friday and Saturday evening in Halifax, N.S. Heading into Friday night’s matchup, Masters was 34 points away from tying Robinson’s record and 35 points away from breaking it. In UNB’s 83-72 come-from behind win, Masters led all scorers with 37 points, adding six rebounds, six assists and four steals in the victory. He was named Subway Player of the Game.
The Varsity Reds went on to earn a dramatic 93-92 win in overtime Saturday. Masters led all scorers once again, accumulating 35 points, to go along with 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals. He was named Subway Player of the Game for the second consecutive night. He now boasts 2,107 career points and counting with 14 games left to play in the regular season to catch the all-time unofficial U SPORTS record of 2,282 points – held by Boris Bakovic across four years at Ryerson and a fifth at Calgary.
A first-year science student from Halifax, N.S., Sarty led the Tigers to a team win at the Kemp-Fry Invitational swim meet at Dalhousie University over the weekend. She won the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events, all with U SPORTS qualifying times. She set a new Dalhousie record in the 200m and narrowly missed setting a new AUS and Dalhousie record in the 100m event. Sarty is currently ranked eighth and sixth in those events, respectively and her time in the 400m ranks her at eighth in the country. Her results also rank her in Dalhousie’s all-time top three performances.
Sarty also had three more wins as part of the Tigers 400m and 800m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay teams and placed second in the 800m freestyle race.
