Manitoba Badminton Association – Steinbach, Jan 29-31 – Tyler, Sarah & Mackenzie brought home a combined 8 medals out of a possible 9 from the 2016 Yonex Eastman Open Badminton Tournament held at Steinbach Regional Secondary School by Badminton Manitoba.

Tyler, the oldest of all three has represented Team Eastman at the Power Smart Manitoba Games in the discipline of Mixed Doubles, and has also represented Whitemouth School at MHSAA High School Provincials in Mixed Doubles as well.  However he’s shown us all at this tournament that although he’s able to play mixed doubles very well, he can excel at the other categories too.  Taking home a Gold in mixed and doubles, he missed the coveted triple crown due to his silver medal in U19, losing to his hometown friend, Riley Kroker-Bear, also from Whitemouth.

Sarah Miller, broke out onto the scene last year with her triple crown victory in Selkirk at the 2015 Yonex Interlake Open, and has since been training in the Identified Player Program in Winnipeg 2X/week since October.  Her work at the Eastman Open brought her home another three medals, Silver in U17 Girls Singles, Gold in U17 Mixed Doubles, and Gold in U19 Girls Doubles.

Finally Mackenzie Ftoma, also from Whitemouth Club, showed her dominance in the youngest age category, U15.  She was a double crown winner by striking gold in Girls Singles as well as Girls Doubles!  She will certainly be on the radar in the next couple years in the provincial tournaments!

The Yonex Eastman Open, part of MBA’s Rural Super Series, celebrated it’s 5th anniversary this year, and in the process saw the largest entry of any annual Badminton Manitoba tournament in the last 6 years with 133 entries.  Entries in the Eastman division are up, and clubs in the Eastman region are getting stronger.
