Swimming – ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Western Canadian swimmers Octavia Lau and Mack Padington were beasts in the East on Thursday as they each won two gold medals to open the 2017 Speedo Eastern Championships.

In the women’s 16 and over competition, Padington, from Victoria, notched victories in the 200-m freestyle and 200-m breaststroke.

In the same age group, it was also a big day for Mabel Zavaros of Oakville, Ont., who reached the podium three times with a victory in the 800-m freestyle, silver in the 100-m backstroke and bronze in the 200-m freestyle.

Madison Broad of Chatham, Ont., won the 100-m backstroke.

In the girls 13 and over, Lau, from New Westminster, B.C., won the opening two races – the 800-m freestyle and the 200-m freestyle. Jade Hannah of Victoria and Faith Nelson of Victoria took the 100-m backstroke and 200-m breaststroke.

The winners in the boys 17 and over were Cale Murdock of Victoria in the 200-m freestyle, William Marois of St-Eustache, Que., in the 100-m backstroke and Connor Isings of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 200-m breaststroke.

In the boys 14 and over winners were Justin Konik of Etobicoke in the 200-m freestyle, Grayse Bernard of Toronto 100-m backstroke and Gabe Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., in the 200-m breaststroke.

Competition continues through to Sunday at the Etobicoke Olympium. Preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
