Two more personal bests for Canada as 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships continue in Bulgaria
The top score of the day came from World Championships rookie Crane, who scored 16.500 to finish 35th overall in the hoop competition. She’s currently sitting 39th in the all-around rankings.
“Today’s hoop routine is definitely the highlight of the competition so far for me,” said Crane who is the reigning senior all-around Canadian champion. “Just being able to compete at the World Championships among the top athletes in the world is a big achievement for me, and setting a personal best was beyond my expectations. I was just hoping to perform three clean routines over the competition, and represent the country. So far I have done a decent ball and hoop routine, and I look forward to performing my clubs routine tomorrow.”
Uchida, Crane’s clubmate from Jusco RGC in Toronto, posted her second personal best score of the competition – a 16.150, to finish the day in 43rd in hoop and 32nd overall in the all-around rankings.
Carmen Whelan of Aurora, ON, who is the 2017 Canadian senior all-around champion, and is attending her third World Championships, had a tough day, as two of her throws today came up short which meant she wasn’t able to complete all her movements, or risks, underneath the throws which affected her overall score. She ended the day with a score of 14.850 to place 65th in the hoop competition, and 54th in the AA competition.
Each federation at the World Championships is allowed 10 routines, with the best eight routines out of the 10 counting towards the team results. Both Crane and Uchida will compete in three apparatus, while Whelan will compete four.
Dina Averina of Russia took the gold medal in the hoop final with a score of 20.850, and was also victorious in the ball final – taking gold with a score of 20.300.
Competition continues tomorrow with Crane and Whelan taking to the floor in the qualification rounds for clubs. Thursday will see the end of the qualification rounds in ribbon for Whelan and Uchida.
