BC Rugby – Vancouver, BC – February 9, 2016: Rugby Canada U20 Men’s XV Head Coach Jeff Williams has named twelve BC Rugby players to the Team that will be facing the United States in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, February 13th. The winner of this single contest will gain the North American entry into the World Rugby U20 Trophy Tournament in Zimbabwe this April.

A total of five BC Rugby Clubs have athletes that came up through their ranks to make the National U20 Team, which includes the Vancouver Rowing Club, James Bay Athletic Association, UVic Vikes, UBC Thunderbirds, and UBC Old Boy Ravens.

Several of the BC Rugby athletes selected today will be donning the National Team kit for the second consecutive year. Reegan O’Gorman (Vancouver Rowing Club), Luke Bradley (UVic Vikes), and teammates Cali Martinez, Theo Sauder and Phil Berna (UBC Thunderbirds) are all experienced at the U20 International level. Berna is also coming off a debut with Rugby Canada’s Senior Men’s Sevens Team at the Wellington Sevens in New Zealand just over a week ago.

These experienced players will be heavily relied on to lead the team in the high pressure game.

“Our total mindset is to win. That’s our first goal,” said Coach Williams. “It’s tough having to play a one-game qualifier but it is out of our hands. We can only control what we do. I have told the boys this will only make us stronger.”

Another noteworthy name amongst the players selected to the Team is George Barton of Duncan, BC. He joined French club ASM Espoirs in Clermont last fall.

Saturday’s game against the United States Men’s U20 Team is set for 6:45pm PST from Dell Diamond in Austin, Texas, with live streaming coverage details to come.

BC Rugby would like to congratulate all the athletes selected to represent their country.
