Triathlon Canada —Newly created Training Academy to play critical role in developing young Canadians into high-performance triathletes—

VICTORIA—The road to the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games will go through Victoria for Canada’s triathletes, thanks to the formalization of Triathlon Canada’s National Performance Centre (NPC) and the organization’s launch of the NPC Academy that is focused on developing tomorrow’s triathletes within a daily performance environment surrounded by the nation’s top support staff.

Working in partnership with 94 Forward, Own the Podium and Sport Canada, Triathlon Canada has created a centralized daily performance environment while utilizing the world-leading facilities available on Vancouver Island. Originally opened one year ago, the National Performance Centre brings together the nation’s top triathletes who will benefit from the best coaching, facilities and sport science/medicine staff in an effort to deliver medal-winning performances. The launch of the Academy will now extend this reach further into the pathway to support the next generation of athletes.

“Surrounding yourself in a competitive culture of excellence where athletes and coaches can take advantage of world-class training facilities and resources is critical to building a successful daily training environment that will foster podium results for Canada’s most dedicated individuals who share a passion to pursue excellence in swimming, biking and running,” said Eugene Liang, high-performance director, Triathlon Canada. “Success stimulates success. A National Performance Centre not only creates a high-performance environment that will provide measuring sticks for Canadian athletes in their development throughout the performance pathway, but it will push each of them to be better while rubbing shoulders with the best-of-the-best in the sports of swimming, cycling, and running.”

In an effort to support the continued progression of athletes through the provincial programs into Triathlon Canada’s National Performance Centre Academy, the model provides developing level athletes the opportunity to work in a centralized environment under the daily guidance of National Performance Centre Assistant Coach, Marc-Antoine Christin, who will work under the leadership of NPC head coach, Jono Hall.

Triathlon Canada will select six elite, six development, along with eight athletes into the Academy. The governing body for triathlon in Canada will also allow for five international athletes to be a part of the elite training group to ensure Canadian athletes are exposed to varying levels of athletes.

Athletes interested in applying to be accepted into the Centre must meet the following guidelines.

Complete terms of reference for the National Performance Centre and Academy, as well as the formal application process, can be found here. Applications for 2018 intake in the fall are currently open until July 30.

At the elite level, the National Performance Centre was designed to facilitate the development of targeted athletes into world-class performers. Led by Olympic pathway coach, Jono Hall, and Paralympic pathway coach, Carolyn Murray, athletes have access to the facilities and sport science staff at Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, while training in a centre of excellence alongside many of Canada’s best Olympic and Paralympic summer-sport athletes at Saanich Commonwealth Place and Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence (PISE).

“Having access to cost-effective, elite-level training facilities at home is what Canadian triathletes must have if we truly want to re-establish ourselves as world-leaders in the sport and bring home more Olympic and Paralympic medals,” said Matt Sharpe, who has leveraged the facilities and support staff in the Victoria area since he was a provincial level athlete. “The National Performance Centre model provides Canada’s triathletes with the advanced resources we require – not to mention surrounds us with elite athletes from other sports. I know a centre of excellence like the National Performance Centre is needed if we truly want to be excellent.”

The coaching staff of the National Performance Centre are employed by Triathlon Canada. Sports science and medical service providers will be accessed through the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific. In an effort to continue developing triathlon coaches across the country, Triathlon Canada will work with its provincial partners to provide mentorship opportunities for coaches across the country by integrating them into the Centre.
