Tough day for rhythmic gymnasts on day one of competition at 2018 Commonwealth Games
Gymnastics Canada – GOLD COAST, AUS (April 11, 2018) – The Canadian rhythmic gymnastics team had a tough beginning to their competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, AUS as they missed making it to the podium in the team finals. They had entered the competition as the defending Commonwealth champions.
The team, composed of Sophie Crane of Toronto, Katherine Uchida – also of Toronto, and Carmen Whelan of Aurora, ON finished fourth with 118.850 points. Cyprus took the gold with 130.625 points; Malaysia the silver with 129.950, and Australia the bronze with 120.800 points.
Crane was the top performer of the day, qualifying for the all-around finals in 9th position, and also advancing to the clubs and hoop finals. At 15-years-old, these Games are her first multi-sport competition, and one of her first major competition as a senior-ranked gymnast.
“Going into this I didn’t know what to expect, this is my first big competition as a senior. Overall I’m pretty happy with my performance. I had a couple of mistakes here and there with ball and ribbon but I’m really happy with how I did,” said Crane who trains out of Jusco RG in Toronto. “I’m also really happy with hoops and clubs because they are my two strong routines, and I’m happy I’ve made the finals with these apparatus. I’m looking forward to Friday!”
Uchida qualified for the all-around finals in 12th position, and has also advanced to the clubs and hoops finals. Whelan, the reigning Canadian all-around champion, had a tough day, and has advanced to just the ribbon finals.
“It is definitely disappointing. The girls looked so good in podium training. They just made mistakes that they never made before. We needed a couple more clean routines and we would have been on the podium,” said team coach Iana Nadtotchii. “If they get rid of the mistakes they made today in the finals, they can definitely be on the podium.”
The individual all-around finals start tomorrow at 2pm local, midnight eastern. Friday features the apparatus finals which start at 10am local, 8pm eastern.
