WHAT:           

The Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games (Toronto 2017 NAIG) Host Society will kick-off the week of the Games with a celebration and ceremonial opening, welcoming the athletes and participants to Toronto. The Toronto 2017 NAIG will be the ninth edition of the Games and the first time the North American Indigenous Games will be hosted in the Province of Ontario. Team Ontario athletes will be on hand, in addition to Games organizers, and other community partners. The event will be hosted in partnership with the Toronto Foundation and Pan Am Path Organization.

Panels from the Birch Bark Canoe Legacy Project will be unveiled, celebrating the distinct Indigenous landscape of the Province of Ontario and traditional art forms of Indigenous peoples. Throughout the week of the Games, from July 16-23, the canoe will be assembled by a traditional canoe builder and will later live-on with the Aboriginal Sport & Wellness Council of Ontario as a legacy initiative of the Games.

About the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games

From July 16-23, 2017, the North American Indigenous Games (2017 NAIG) will welcome more than 5,000 participants, 2,000 volunteers and countless spectators from across North America. Sport and cultural venues include Humber College, McMaster University, York University, University of Toronto Scarborough, City of Toronto facilities, City of Hamilton venues, and venues within Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. A total of 14 sports will be offered for competition during the event, in addition to week-long cultural festivals, featuring programming such as traditional teachings, Indigenous artists, vendors and cultural performers.
