LANGFORD, BC – The HSBC Canada Sevens organizing committee announced today that tournament passes for the HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens Tournament taking place April 16-17, 2016 at Westhills Stadium in Langford, will go on sale to early–bird registrants on January 21st and general public on January 25th.Tournament passes start at just $40 while single day tickets can be purchased for $25.

The tournament marks the second straight year Canada has hosted a leg of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series at the home of Canadian Rugby on Vancouver Island. Last year’s inaugural tournament saw a sold-out crowd of over 6,600 fans. Fans are encouraged to register for the early-bird list at www.canadasevens.com/womens to secure their exclusive ticket purchase window.

“The HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens brings together the world’s best in a sport that features unparalleled speed, athleticism and team play against a backdrop of infectious fan spirit,” said Canada Sevens CEO Bill Cooper. “The fact that the 2016 edition doubles as the last time to see Team Canada play on home soil before battling for a medal in Rio makes April 16 – 17 an even more so not to be missed event.”

The two-day event will be the final opportunity to see Canada’s women’s sevens team face the best rugby nations in the world on home soil before their Olympic campaign in August as part of Team Canada. Canada clinched its spot at the Games last year after their second place finish in the 2014-15 standings, its best ever result.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens team heads into 2016 coming off of its most successful season in program history. After securing Olympic qualification for the inaugural Rugby Sevens event at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and also claiming its first Cup title in Amsterdam, Canada capped it off in style by claiming gold at the 2015 Pan-Am Games on home soil in Toronto in dominant fashion.

The worldwide growth of rugby sevens has had an impact on the commercial side as major sponsors, including DHL, The Butchart Gardens and The Keg, alongside longstanding partners the Province of British Columbia and the City of Langford, have partnered with Canada Sevens for both the men’s and women’s events in 2016.

Rugby sevens is rapidly growing worldwide with the 2014-15 men’s and women’s Sevens Series setting record viewing numbers. With the sport’s addition to the 2016 Olympic Games, it has received even more global attention and has seen some of rugby’s biggest stars declare their interest in representing their country in sevens as well as the standard 15-aside game.

“It is very exciting that British Columbia will once again host a stop on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series,” Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Peter Fassbender said. “Sport hosting is very important to our government and we can see our work in this area is paying off when events of this calibre choose to come to B.C. Rugby fans will get the chance to see world-class athletes compete in this exciting sport in the months leading up to Team Canada competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.”

The 2015-16 Series kicked off in December in Dubai and will make stops in Sao Paolo, Brazil (Feb. 20-21) and Atlanta, Georgia (Apr. 8-9) before coming to Langford. The final event of the year is in Clermont-Ferrand, France on May 28-29.
