Archery Canada – OTTAWA (Archery Canada) – Three-time Olympian Crispin Duenas of Scarborough, Ont., tied for ninth overall in men’s recurve at the Antalya 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup, which got underway Monday and is set to conclude on Saturday with the medal matches in the coastal city located on the Turkish Riviera.

The lone Canadian competing in the second World Cup event of the season, Duenas was stellar in Monday’s ranking round as he finished sixth in a field of 123 with an impressive score of 680, a performance that earned him a bye through the first two elimination rounds held on Tuesday.

 

Back in action on Wednesday, the 32-year-old resumed his successful run with a 7-3 win over Jack Williams of the United States in the round of 32, closing out the match with a perfect score of 30 in the fifth set.

 

Duenas’ tournament came to an end later in the day, however, as he was defeated 6-4 in the round of 16 by local favourite Mete Gazoz, who represented Turkey at the 2016 Olympics.

 

Saturday’s gold-medal final will see world number one Kim Woo-jin face off against countryman Lee Woo-seok in an all-South Korea affair.  

 

“The round of 16 was a close match going all five sets with Crispin and his opponent tying two sets.  Crispin had a missed opportunity in the second set which could have given him a controlling lead of the match,” said Canadian national recurve coach Shawn Riggs. “It would have been really nice to beat Gazoz, as there was an opportunity to go through to the medal rounds based on how the draw was and how the other archers were shooting.

 

“Although Crispin exited the competition earlier than we would have liked, there were some positive things to take away from the week. His qualifying score was the best he has produced at world-level competition in the last three or four years. What is even more exciting for me is that after this week, I strongly believe he can raise his game a few more points this season. The opportunities for improvement are clearly identified and we have a plan to maximize them.”

 

Antalya was the second of four stops on the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit, with upcoming events set for Salt Lake City, USA (June 18-24) and Berlin, Germany (July 16-22). The World Cup Finals are scheduled for Sept. 29-30 in Samsun, Turkey.
