Manitoba Badminton Association – Thien Vo & Melissa Liew Dominate Their Events 2 Titles Each at Provincial Open Championship

Winnipeg, Dec 3, 2017 – Thien Vo wins Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, while Melissa Liew wins Women’s Singles & Mixed Doubles!  Leah Inglis and Kristin Szuminsky take Women’s Doubles at the Herb Richard Manitoba Open Badminton Championships at the Winnipeg Winter Club this past weekend!

Thien Vo has been ranked as high as 3rd in the country in recent years for Men’s Singles, and he showed why at this weekend’s big tournament in Manitoba.  He had to fight a battle against fellow Winter Club player Felix Tessier in Men’s Singles 21-18, 21-11, and his doubles final with Derek Okabe who earned his first provincial title ever against Sean Chawla/Kyle Grymonpre 21-16 27-25.

Melissa on the other hand is back from her university studies in Vancouver to once again dominate the local scene.  She won Womens Singles by defeating defending provincial champion Tiffany Tantakoun 21-10 21-12, and she paired up with new Manitoban Alexander Fung (originally from Edmonton) to defeat Sean Chawla/Leah Inglis 21-9 21-13.

Thien Vo will continue to play the national scene with an upcoming tournament in Toronto in January, and then National Championships in early February.  Melissa will compete locally at the upcoming tournaments in Manitoba.
