The Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA) – Burnaby, BC – The Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA), alongside the University of British Columbia, hosted the Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC) in Burnaby on November 3-5^th.  Eighteen universities from across the country took part in this year’s championships.

The Western University women’s team and the University of British Columbia (UBC) men’s team won this year’s point total, capturing the 2017 CURA banners. Western was crowned team champions for the fifth consecutive year, with UBC enjoying their second consecutive men’s crown. 

The national event included seasoned rowers and up and coming talent.  Rio Olympian Caleigh Filmer led the University of Victoria W8+ and Single to event championships.  Saskatchewan native Larissa Werbicki dominated the light weight women’s events, winning the coxed Four, coxless Double and single.  Larissa was also crowned the Oarswoman of the Year by CURA. 

The men’s field was equally star studded including recent U23 World Champion Trevor Jones who secured a win against a deep field of talent in the heavyweight men’s single. 

The highlight race of the event goes to the heavyweight men’s pair.  Taylor Perry and Mathew Szymanowski (UVic) beat out Curtis Ames and Brayden Halvorson (UWO) by a mere 0.1 seconds.  Other notables include Aaron Latimer (UBC), named Oarsman of the Year.  Women’s Coach of the Year was awarded to Rick Crawley of the University of Victoria.  Crawley, a long time coach for the University of Victoria, will retire at the conclusion of this year.  Men’s Coach of the Year was awarded to Mike Pearce of the UBC.

Banner champions UWO and UBC were among the five universities recently selected at RCA NextGen hubs. NextGen Hub environments will provide athletes access to an uncompromising culture of excellence, supported with optimal coach to athlete ratio and performance planning within the University rowing program.

 

Next year, the CURC’s will take place in Central Canada.
