FAEQ – The Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ) presented its first edition of the Collegiate Recruitment Bursary Program by distributing   $44,000 in individual bursaries to 22 deserving student-athletes. The program was created with the objective to encourage the best Quebec student-athletes from the RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) to continue their athletic and academic careers in a Quebec Cégep institution.

The twenty-two recipients received $2,000 individual bursaries destined to help them pursue their academic and athletic careers in a Quebec institution, all the while competing in an RSEQ division 1 sport, specifically; basketball, football, hockey, soccer and volleyball.

“We are very pleased that the FAEQ is taking the initiative to encourage our outstanding student-athletes to pursue their academic and athletic careers in a Quebec Cégep institution,” said Gustave Roel, President and executive director of the RSEQ. “This will go a long way to encouraging academic excellence through sport, and will allow these student-athletes to concentrate solely on their development in the classroom and on the field.”

The program was announced in February of 2017 and immediately the Foundation began to receive deserving applications. Each candidacy was diligently evaluated thanks to the precious collaboration of the Quebec sport federations who identified and prioritized the best student-athletes. The Foundation’s selection committee then proceeded with the final selection.

“The caliber and diversity of the recipients in this first cohort is outstanding and shows the depth and the quality of student-athletes coming out of our secondary school system”, mentioned Patricia Demers, Executive Director of the FAEQ. “We are happy to contribute to their development and that of the RSEQ.”

The bursaries were presented in Quebec City during the annual general meeting of the RSEQ in the presence of representatives of the athletics departments of Quebec secondary, Cégep and university institutions.
