The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay ignites Canada Day in Gillam/Fox Lake
2017 Canada Summer Games – Gillam, MB (July 1, 2017) – The town of Gillam took on a festive air today as the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay infused Canada Day celebrations with the spirit of the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Games mascot Niibin was on hand to cheer on five individuals and numerous groups who were chosen by a local selection committee to carry the Canada Games’ Roly McLenahan torch over 13 relay legs through the streets of Gillam.
There was an unmistakeable air of team spirit at Gillam’s Manitoba HydroTorch Relay as several groups took turns carried the torch along the route, including: Gillam Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers, Gillam Brownies and Girl Guides, Gillam School Student Council, the Town of Gillam RCMP, Mayor and Council, Fox Lake Cree Nation Chief and Council and Fox Lake Cree Nation Elders.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay carries the excitement of the Games throughout Manitoba. The torch was lit in Ottawa on June 6, 2017 for the official lighting ceremony. On June 21, Indigenous Elders and Grandmothers infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, while honouring the land and waters the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held upon. Between June 23 and July 26, the Roly McLenahan Torch will travel to 10 communities around the province, as well as to Kenora, Ontario.
