2017 Canada Summer Games – The Pas, MB (July 10, 2017) – The 2017 Canada Summer Games team received a warm welcome in The Pas today as the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay made a stop in the town also known as Canada’s Gateway to the North, located 675 km north of Winnipeg.

The Relay route began at the historic Arbor Site in Opaskwayak Cree Nation. After a pep rally and warm-up, thirteen local torchbearers who had been chosen by a local selection committee made their way through Opaskwayak, over the Saskatchewan River and into The Pas, ending at the Manitoba Hydro Office on 3rd Street East.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay took a poignant turn in The Pas, as 16-year old torchbearer Dallan Coulter passed away on July 3, 2017 after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer, just days before his opportunity to carry the Roly McLenahan torch. Dallan was 13 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. Dallan’s sister Tenille and friend Justin Marlow ran his leg of the relay in Dallan’s honour.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay carries the excitement of the Games throughout Manitoba. The torch was lit in Ottawa on June 6, 2017 for the official lighting ceremony. On June 21, Indigenous Elders and Grandmothers infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, while honouring the land and waters the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held upon.  Between June 23 and July 26, the Roly McLenahan Torch will travel to 10 communities around the province, as well as to Kenora, Ontario.

*Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of all information regarding the torchbearers including the correct spelling of their name. Events and participants are subject to change.  We regret any error that may have found its way into the list or any other communication material.
