Canada Games Council – (February 27^th, 2017) Ontario – The Canada Games Council (CGC) Bid Evaluation Committee is conducting site visits in Ontario as part of the evaluation process to choose the host of the 2021 Canada Summer Games. The host of the 2021 Games will be announced on March 30^th in Toronto.

The seven-member evaluation team, chaired by Vice-president of Revenue Generation for the 2009 Canada Summer Games in PEI and current Canada Games Council Board Member; Wayne Carew, will be visiting each of the four communities for one day during this week. The CGC Bid Evaluation Committee will visit Greater Sudbury on February 27^th, Waterloo Region on February 28^th, Niagara Region on March 1^st and Ottawa on March 2^nd. These visits will then be followed by CGC Bid Evaluation Committee meetings.

The evaluation process included Phase I; a review of the potential communities’ technical components (Sports Venues, Games Village and other key venues) to provide a report to the CGC Bid Evaluation Committee. During Phase II, the CGC Bid Evaluation Committee assessed the Comprehensive Host Community Bid Proposals and will now conduct site visits to all bidding communities. These site visits allow the bid communities the opportunity to reinforce their information, add value to the written descriptions in the bid proposal and answer questions posed in writing from the Bid Evaluation Committee upon receipt of the bid proposals. 

“The site visits are a great opportunity for each community to creatively showcase what they have to offer in regards to hosting a Canada Games,” says Wayne Carew, Bid Evaluation Committee Chair, Canada Games Council. “During the site visits, information is provided to the CGC Bid Evaluation Committee during a pre-set agenda identical for each community to ensure complete objectivity.”  

Once the CGC Bid Evaluation Committee has conducted thorough site visits to all bidding communities, it will provide a final report to the CGC Board of Directors. Following the detailed process, the CGC Board of Directors will notify the Province of Ontario about the final selection of the successful 2021 community. The public announcement will then be made in on March 30^th at Hart House in Toronto.

Having hosted the 1981 Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay and the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, the 2021 Canada Games will mark the third time the Canada Summer Games are hosted in the province of Ontario.

The Canada Games generate many benefits for host regions in the legacies they provide. Whether they be infrastructure improvements for the city, exposure for the region through national broadcasts and webcasts or simply through increased tourist visitations, entire communities are changed for the better after having hosted the unique premium event that is the Canada Games.

Held once every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games represent the highest level of national competition for up and coming Canadian athletes. The Games have been hosted in every province at least once since their inception in Quebec City during Canada’s Centennial in 1967. The Games are proud of their contribution to Canada’s sport development system in addition to their lasting legacy of sport facilities, community pride and national unity.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg are the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games and will be held from July 28th to August 13th.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer will be held from February 15th to March 3rd.
