The battle continues at the 2018 Save-On-Foods Canadian Ringette Championships in Winnipeg
Ringette Canada – Winnipeg, Manitoba – April 11, 2018 – Another day of round-robin play, another day of exciting games at the 2018 Save-On-Foods Canadian Ringette Championships in Winnipeg. Teams continue to battle for national titles in the U16, U19 as well as the National Ringette League (NRL) championship title.
Only three of the 21 teams in the U16 division remain undefeated after the third day of round-robin play. Alberta’s Zone 2 beat Sherwood Park Power 6-1 and downed Central Whitby Sharks 7-6; Calgary Surge trumped Manitoba Wild 10-3 and posted a 3-2 overtime win over the Manitoba Angels; and New Brunswick beat Calgary Shock 6-5 and handed the Regina Stingers their first loss with a 3-1 score. The Stingers’s Abby Corney (Emerald Park) maintained her top spot on the points leaderboard with a total of 21 points, but she’s got company – Zone 2’s Riley Wasylyniuk (Cochrane) has also collected 21 points.
In the U19 division, the Guelph Predators are the lone team standing undefeated after posting an 8-5 win over Edmonton Elite and beating Team BC 6-1. Calgary Strive ended Team Quebec’s winning streak, beating them 3-2. Strive also beat Saskatchewan 5-3 today. The Predators’ Claire Wyville (Morrison, ON) and Team Manitoba’s Alana Lesperance (Winnipeg) share the top scoring spot in the U19 division with 23 points each.
In today’s NRL championship tournament play, Edmonton WAM! beat Richmond Hill Lightning 8-3 to put them at three wins and one loss. Atlantic Attack holds the same record after beating Cambridge Turbos 6-4. Montreal Mission beat Gatineau Fusion 10-8 today and their center, Julie Blanchette, now tops the leaderboard for points in the NRL at 20.
Games are taking place at the Seven Oaks Arena and BellMTS IcePlex, with finals being held at the BellMTS Place. Competition in all divisions started today and will run all week, with the finals in all three divisions taking place on Saturday, April 14 (U16 at 11:30 CDT, U19 at 13:30 CDT and NRL at 15:30 CDT). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday night.
