Tennis Canada – ParticipACTION providing $5,000 grant to be distributed to clubs
– Tennis is one of 150 activities on the ParticipACTION 150 Play List
– First-ever Tennis Day in Canada encourages people across the country to try tennis
– Clubs across Canada to offer free programming for all

Toronto, April 28, 2017 – As the inaugural Tennis Day in Canada gets set to hit its first serve on Saturday May 13, Tennis Canada is teaming up with ParticipACTION to celebrate the sport of tennis, support clubs participating in the event, and increase awareness. All Canadians from across the country are encouraged to pick up a racquet and play tennis – whether for the first time or 1,000th time – on May 13 with over 150 clubs across the country offering free courts and programming.

“We are so pleased to be partnering with ParticipACTION, an incredible organization whose values and goals aligns with Tennis Canada so well, and we thank them for their support,” said Hatem McDadi, senior vice-president of tennis development, Tennis Canada. “Together, we look forward to seeing Canadians across the country be active and play tennis on May 13. Tennis has been such a positive force for so many people, and we hope many more people will soon discover just how fun, safe, affordable, and accessible it can be for everyone.”

As part of the partnership, ParticipACTION will be providing a $5,000 grant to Tennis Canada which will be distributed to nine participating Tennis Day in Canada clubs via a draw. Clubs can enter by registering their public event on both the Tennis Day in Canada website and ParticipACTION’s 150 Play List directory. The additional $500 will be used to provide children with free tennis racquets at special Tennis Day in Canada events in Toronto and Montreal.

Tennis is also part of the ParticipACTION 150 Play List, in which Canadians are being encouraged to try 150 activities this year in celebration of the country’s 150th anniversary. Participating in Tennis Day in Canada on May 13 will be a great opportunity for Canadians to try a new sport and check off another activity on their Play List.

“The ParticipACTION 150 Play List is a physical-activity movement, inspiring and motivating Canadians everywhere to move more and sit less,” said Elio Antunes, president and CEO of ParticipACTION. “Grab your family, friends or colleagues and try as many activities on this list as possible, from tennis to trampolining. And, remember, physical activity isn’t just great for our health—it’s part of who we are as Canadians.”

Canadians are encouraged to simply play tennis on Tennis Day in Canada, whether it’s at a participating club, at a public court or even on a driveway. Over 150 clubs from 11 provinces and territories will offer free activities led by certified Tennis Professionals Association coaches, making the sport more accessible than ever on May 13. People of all ages, experience, and ability can take part.

The deadline for clubs to enter for a chance to win a $500 grant courtesy of ParticipACTION is May 1 at 12 p.m. ET. For more details on Tennis Day in Canada and a complete listing of participating clubs, please visit tennisdayincanada.com.
