Team Nova Scotia Wins Medals at National Rowing Championships
Row Nova Scotia’s Provincial Team is back this week after a stellar performance at the National Rowing Championship in Burnaby, BC that took place from November 9-12.
On Saturday, Tristan Kays and Noel Balsor claimed a bronze in the junior men’s pair and Claire Ellison rowed to a bronze in her junior single women’s race. Hannah Meeson followed close behind and crossed the line fourth in junior women’s single. Ben Walls came fourth, just missing a medal, in the junior men’s single and Cody Bailey came in the ninth in the senior men’s single. For the team’s efforts, Nova Scotia won the Efficiency Award at the Regatta, showing the rest of Canada that small teams can have great results.
“I’m very proud of this young team,” said Row Nova Scotia president Peter Webster. “They’ve worked very hard over the past year with provincial Head Coach Pat Cody, pushing the limits however and whenever they could. The fact that we had these results with three high school students and two first year university students shows that the rowing program in Nova Scotia is developing great rowers.”
Six rowers represented Nova Scotia in BC this year against the finest rowers from across the country. The small boat racing – only singles and pairs – provides the ideal measure to assess the fastest rowers in the country. For some athletes, this regatta serves as a development opportunity on their path to represent Canada on the world stage.
