Softball Canada – (Surrey, BC) The Canadian Women’s National Team finished first place in Pool D by defeating Uganda 10-0 in four innings at the WBSC Women’s World Softball Championship. Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) paced the offence with a three-run homerun – her third of the tournament – and an RBI triple while Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) fired a four inning perfect game. Team Canada now advances to the Championship Round Robin in a group with Venezuela (1-1, 2nd in Pool A), Puerto Rico (3-0, 1st in Pool E) and Italy (2-1, 2nd in Pool H). Their next game will be against Venezuela at 7:30pm PDT on Monday.
 
Team Canada got on the board by producing eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) led off with a double and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by Jen Yee (North Delta, BC). Erika Polidori (Brantford, ON) singled to put runners on the corners before Salling hit her three-run blast to left. Megan Gurski (Dalmeny, SK) kept things going with a double and scored on another double by Sara Riske (Richmond, BC). Natalie Wideman (Mississauga, ON) reached on a walk before an error allowed Riske to score from second and Wideman to advance to third, while Logan White (Brantford, ON) moved up to second. Hayward then hit a two-run single to increase the lead to 8-0 and Yee singled before Uganda turned a double play on a line drive to shortstop to end the inning.
 
Salling walked and Gurski singled to put two runners on base quickly for Canada in the second, but Salling was put out at third on a fielder’s choice followed by a pop out to shortstop before Wideman singled to left to score Gurski. Salling then hit a run-scoring triple in the third to put Canada up 10-0. Hovinga retired Uganda in order in all four innings to pick up the win.

Hovinga retired all twelve batters she faced with five strikeouts. Salling went two-for-two with a homerun, a triple, a walk and four runs batted in, while Yee hit three singles and an RBI. Hayward doubled and singled and drove in two with Gurski also registering a double and a single. Riske had an RBI double and Wideman had a run-scoring single.
 
In other scores on Day 3, Mexico blanked Switzerland, Australia shut out Serbia and the United States beat Brazil all by a score of 13-0. Great Britain and Chinese Taipei defeated Ireland and India respectively by a score of 15-0, while Puerto Rico and Japan earned 7-0 wins over Ecuador and France. The Netherlands outscored the Philippines 7-2, Greece shut down Guatemala 2-0, Peru beat Kenya 10-3, New Zealand edged Italy 8-7, China defeated Cuba 9-1 and Austria beat Israel 13-2.
 
The top two teams from each preliminary round Pool now advance to the Championship Round Robin, while the other teams will compete in the Placement Round Robin. This second round will be played from Monday to Thursday before the playoff round begins on Friday.
