 – PUTIAN, CHN (March 29, 2016) — The 2016 Acrobatic Gymnastics World Age Group Competition wrapped up in Putian, China this past weekend with strong performances by all athletes, including two groups advancing to the finals for the first time in Canadian history.

“This experience has been amazing,” said Tessa Hickey of Oakville, ON who competed in the 13-19 year-old women’s group. “Meeting people from all over the world and making new friends while competing on the world stage — I can’t wait for the next international competition.”

Hickey and her teammates, Kelsey Horn of Oakville, ON and Sophie Lake of Burlington, ON finished 17th in their qualifying round with a total score of 52.190. In the 12-18 year-old women’s group, Charlotte Penner, Alexandra D’Souza, and Erin Oswald, all from Oakville, ON finished 19th in the qualifying round with a final score of 52.900. Only the top eight teams advance to the finals.

Canada had a larger contingent of athletes in the 11-16 year-old categories which competed earlier in the week, highlighted by the 7th place finishes in the finals by Brenely Martin and Anastasia Sizov, both of Calgary, AB in the women’s pair, and Tessa Chiricosta, Jenelle Coutinho of Oakville, ON and Daniela Mendoza of Burlington, ON in the women’s group.

Other Canadian athletes in the 11-16 age group were Ava Gokiert and Jenna Gorchynski of Calgary, AB who finished 11th in the women’s pair qualification round with a total score of 25.050; Allison Attard, Ally Swanepoel, and Emma Shemko all of Oakville, ON, who placed 22nd with an overall score of 49.450 in the women’s group; and Juliana Summers and Theodore Rots from Oakville, ON who finished 16th in the mixed pair qualification round with a score of 52.000.

“After working with the Canadian athletes for just over one year, we couldn’t be happier with what we achieved this week,” said Scott Middleton, club coach for the Oakville Gymnastics Club that had several athletes on the team. “Onwards and upwards for the Canadian acrobatic team, Antwerp 2018, here we come!”

Competition continues in Putian this week with the 2016 Acrobatic World Championships which run from April 1-3. No Canadians are entered in the event.
