Ringette Canada – Mississauga, ON – November 30, 2017 – Defending junior world champions, Team Canada, dealt Finland an 8-3 loss in the first game of a best two out of three series in the Junior Pool at the 2017 World Ringette Championships today. Winnipeg’s Alana Lesperance scored a hat trick in the game, while Moncton’s Britney Snowdon and assistant captain Sydney Nosal (St. Clements) each scored a pair. Waterloo’s Erin Markle posted a lone goal and two assists. Boucherville’s Laurie St-Pierre picked up player of the game for her solid performance between the pipes for Canada.

“We played well and we stuck to our game plan,” commented Alana Lesperance following the win. “We executed our game and it showed on the ice.”

In an exciting battle between Canada and Finland’s senior teams, Finland beat Canada 7-4, in the first game of a best two out of three series in the Sam Jacks Pool. Nepean’s Kelsey Youldon opened the scoring and also scored Canada’s fourth goal, while Calgary’s Shaundra Bruvall scored a pair and was awarded the player of the game for Canada. Finland’s Tiia Halme and Maija Vayrynen posted two goals each, with singles coming from Susana Tapani, Anne Pohjola and Marjukka Virta. Vayrynen was named player of the game for Finland.

Earlier in the day, USA downed Czech Republic 14-1. Claire Wyville, who lives in St. Mary’s, Ontario, posted an impressive six goals and three assists in the game and was awarded player of the game for USA. Nina Branicka picked up the player of the game nod for Czech Republic.

Junior national teams from Canada and Finland are competing in a best two-out-of-three series in the Junior Pool, with Team Canada looking to defend the world title they won at the last world championships. Senior national teams from Canada and Finland are competing in a best two-out-of-three series in the Sam Jacks Pool, with Finland looking to defend the world title they have held for the last five championship events.

Sweden, Czech Republic and USA are competing in the Presidents’ Pool, which consists of a full round-robin series followed by a semi-final game on December 2 and a final game on December 3, when the President’s Trophy will be awarded.
