Taekwondo Canada – (Muju, Korea) The Word Taekwondo Federation hosted the Team Leaders Meeting at Hotel Tirol on June 22. Team Canada’s coaches, team lead and team manager were in attendance.

Tournament director Philippe Bouedo confirmed that the venue will host five rings and use the KP&P system. If an athlete wins his or her quarterfinal match, the semi-final and possible final match will be scheduled for the next day (the only exception will be for the F-62kg and M-80kg divisions since these two categories are scheduled to compete on the last day of the event). During the semifinals and finals, only the central ring will be used. The WTF will live stream all five rings online here: http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/competition/world-taekwondo-championships/championships-2017/live/

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled on June 24th at 4pm local time (June 24th, 3am EST). Team Canada has chosen Skylar Park and Maxim Potvin to represent the team at the Opening Ceremony (Skylar Park will be the flag bearer). South Korea’s president Mr. Moon Jae-In will attend the opening ceremony, marking the first time in the history of the WTF World Taekwondo Championship that the president of South Korea will be present.

The WTF is confident that the sport of taekwondo has the quality to becoming one of the marquee sports at the Olympic Games. The organizing committee has deployed every effort to make this event a successful one. The president of the WTF Dr. Chungwon Choue addressed the attendees at the end of the technical meeting.  His speech emphasized on taekwondo’s social responsibility and WTF’s commitment to harnessing the power of taekwondo for good.

The competition draw was made after the technical meeting. You can find the results of that draw here: http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/competition/world-taekwondo-championships/championships-2017/information/

“The overall draw is what we have expected,” said Master Sungmin Son. “We are facing some strong opponents in the first round, but many of our top athletes are seeded. In fact, there are no weak countries here as we have seen at the 2016 Rio Olympics. As Canadians, we will bring our ‘A’ game to every single match and we are ready to take on the world.”
