Team Canada dominant in win over Sweden at 2018 IFAF World Junior Championships
Football Canada – Japan to be the team’s next opponent on Wednesday in Mexico City.
Mexico City, Mexico (July 15, 2018) – Clicking on all cylinders offensively and defensively, Canada cruised to a 49-6 victory over Sweden on the first day of action at the 2018 IFAF World Junior Championships at Olympic Stadium in Mexico City.
Canada opened the scoring 1:27 into the first quarter when quarterback Dylan Tabone dove into the end zone to give the team the early lead.
Sweden tried to respond back but gave Canada a gift when they threw an interception directly into the hands of Danny McWhirter. However, Antoine Couture’s 29 yard field goal attempt went wide.
With 4:36 left in the first quarter, Canada struck again when Andreas Dueck passed the ball over to Jalen Philpot who sprinted into the end zone for a major.
Two minutes later, Tabone pushed into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game.
Only 55 seconds into the second quarter, Dueck runs the ball himself down field into the end zone for a rushing touchdown.
With 5:08 remaining before the half, Dueck connects with Carl Chabot for a major.
At halftime, Canada enjoyed a 35-0 lead over Sweden.
In the second half, Sweden started showings signs of life and started exposing cracks in Canada’s secondary. With 7:06 left in the third quarter, the team would get their first touchdown of the game.
With 4:04 left in the third quarter, Dueck hands the ball off to Glodin Mulali who pulls away from multiple Swedish tacklers to coast into the end zone.
Canada rounds out the scoring when Lukas Boulanger throws the ball to Kevens Ciercius who runs into the end zone for a touchdown score with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
“It’s always tough the first game when you never know your opponent very well when you have film on them,” Canada Head Coach Steve Sumarah said after the game. “I thought our guys handled the situation extremely well.”
“I thought we came out and set a precedence right out of the gate. We did a lot of good things on offence moving the ball. Some of our playmakers made plays which is which is what we needed. Defensively, we caused a lot of turnovers early in the game and that so got us up early. From there, we just sort of settled in and played a pretty solid game. I’m very happy with the effort and to be honest with you, I have been happy with the effort here all week. These guys have been really dialled in, representing themselves and their country extremely well.”
Dueck was named Player of the Game for Canada.
