Softball Canada​ – Santo Domingo, D.R. – Team Canada picked up two more wins at the IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship on Wednesday, defeating the British Virgin Islands 11-0 before blanking Cuba 8-0. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, Alta.) allowed only two hits in the four-inning shutout win against the British Virgin Island, while Jenna Caira (Toronto, Ont.) fired a six-inning perfect game in the afternoon game against Cuba.
In the morning game against the British Virgin Islands, Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, B.C.) led off the top of the first with a homerun followed by a double by Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and a triple by Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.). An RBI ground out by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, Ont.) pushed a third run home as Canada took a quick 3-0 lead. In the second, Team Canada loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Jenkins before Franklin cleared them with a three-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly on the next play to increase Canada’s lead to 7-0. After both teams were retired in order in the third, the red and white loaded the bases again with two walks and a single by Polidori before Hayward hit a two-run single, Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, Ont.) hit an RBI double and a sacrifice fly pushed another run in to score.

Hovinga picked up the four-inning win for Canada, allowing only two hits and striking out eight. Franklin had a triple, a double and drove in three runs, while Polidori added two hits including a triple and had two runs batted in. Jenkins contributed two hits including a homerun, with Hayward producing three runs.
Against Cuba, Team Canada opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Polidori singled and Carey-Leigh Vyse (Ohsweken, Ont.) walked before both scored on a single by Jenkins. Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Polidori hit an RBI single in the fifth as Canada increased its lead to 4-0. In the sixth, Jenkins hit an RBI single and Holly Speers (Surrey, B.C.) smashed a two-run double, with another run scoring on an error to push the lead to 8-0. Caira retired Cuba in order in all six innings with six strikeouts for the run rule shortened perfect game.

Polidori racked up three hits and drove in a run for Canada, while Jenkins had a hit and four runs batted in. Hayward registered two hits, with Speers adding a two-run single and other hits going to Rafter, Vyse and Joey Lye (Toronto, Ont.).
Team Canada (7-0) will wrap up its preliminary round schedule against Panama at 6:30pm EDT on Thursday.
