Team Alberta – (Winnipeg, MB) The last competition of the 2017 Canada Games program ended on Sunday morning with the presentation of the gold medal match in women’s softball, with Alberta facing off against British Columbia, undefeated throughout the tournament.

Alberta was first on the scoreboard scoring a single run in the first inning. However, BC responded quickly to Alberta’s run and managed to score nine runs in the following three innings to take a 9-1 lead. Alberta added two runs in the fifth inning, but that proved to be not enough to close the large gap.

BC scored one run the following inning, bringing the score to 10-3 to end the match early after six innings.

Alberta settled for the silver medal, the third time that Alberta takes the silver medal in the women’s softball tournament. Alberta also won silver in 2001 and 1985. Alberta has never won gold in women’s softball.

In yesterday’s 5km open water swimming competition, that uniquely took place indoor at the Pan-Am pool, Edmonton’s Emma O’Croinin won the gold medal, her fourth gold medal of these Canada Games. In addition to the four gold medals, O’Croinin earned a silver medal and bronze medal.

Alberta finished the 2017 Canada Summer Games with 97 medals (26-38-33), fourth in the medal standings.
