Stephane Antiga to step down from Canadian coaching position
Volleyball Canada – After two successful seasons as head coach of the Canadian men’s volleyball team, Stéphane Antiga – originally of Suresnes, France – is stepping down for personal reasons.
Antiga led the men’s team to a bronze medal at the FIVB World League finals in Brazil last year, a respectable seventh place at 2018 Volleyball Nations League and ninth overall at the FIVB World Championship this September.
“It has been an honour to work with the athletes and coaches in the Canadian program. There has been a lot of progress with this team in the past several years, under Glenn Hoag, and I was proud to assist in this tradition of improvement these last two seasons,” said Antiga, who has a young family based in Europe. “I have to put my family first, but I will very much miss being involved with the Canadian team, and I wish them continued growth and success moving forward.”
Antiga is also the head coach of ONICO Warszawa, based in Warsaw, which is part of the Polish league, PlusLiga. He also led the Polish National Team to its 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship title in Poland. His playing career as an outside hitter included many top European teams, and he was also a fixture on the French National Team from 1998 to 2010.
“I have enjoyed working with the coaches, staff and of course the athletes in Canada and thank the team for making this time a memorable experience,” said Antiga.
Volleyball Canada wishes Antiga continued success with his coaching career.
“We know that this decision was not taken lightly and we thank Stephane for his hard work and dedication to our men’s team over the last two international seasons. He has brought a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to the team, and we will continue to build on this moving forward,” said Julien Boucher, Volleyball Canada’s Indoor High Performance Director. “He will be missed by both the athletes and staff.”
Volleyball Canada is working on a staffing plan for the men’s team, and will be releasing more information as soon as the details are finalized.
