Canada Soccer – Paul Stalteri has been appointed Canada Soccer’s Men’s National U-17 Team Coach for the upcoming cycle of CONCACAF and FIFA competitions. Coach Stalteri will lead the program for both the CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship (dates yet to be determined) and FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.
Stalteri has been a coach in Canada Soccer’s national youth program since 2013, notably serving as a coach with Canada’s U-15 program. He also served as an assistant coach at the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship last January. He earned his Canada Soccer Coaching B Licence in 2013 and is currently enrolled in the 2015-16 A Licence program.
“I am pleased to announce that Paul Stalteri has been appointed our U-17 Coach,” said Tony Fonseca, Canada Soccer’s Technical Director. “Paul has served as one of our U-15 coaches over the past three years and has played an integral role in connecting with our Canadian MLS/NASL academy partners and local technical directors from provinces and territories.”
As a player, Stalteri was a long-standing member of the Men’s National Team program. A CONCACAF champion and two-time Canadian Player of the Year, he participated in three cycles of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and five editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. At the club level, he played in Canada, Germany and England, winning both Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal (German Cup) titles with Werder Bremen in 2004.
“Paul brings with him many years of critical experiences from playing in CONCACAF and top environments in our game,” continued Fonseca.
At the youth level, he represented Canada at both the FIFA U-17 World Cup Japan 1993 and FIFA U-20 World Cup Malaysia 1997. He also won a CONCACAF youth title in 1996.
“Having represented Canada with great pride and passion at all levels of competition as a player, I am now truly honoured to continue my commitment to Canada Soccer and lead the U-17s as the new coach,” said coach Stalteri. “It will take dedication, commitment, hard work, and attention to detail from every player and staff member to ultimately reach our goal of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.”
Coach Sean Fleming, who served as U-17 Coach through four CONCACAF/FIFA cycles, will now serve in Canada Soccer’s Coach Education Department alongside Ray Clark. Fleming, who helped Canada reach back-to-back FIFA U-17 World Cups in 2011 and 2013, will help develop our coaches at future Canada Soccer Coaching License courses.
In more than 30 years since CONCACAF’s U-17 competition was inaugurated in 1985 (briefly as a U-16 tournament), Stalteri is the seventh different Canadian coach. Stalteri follows Fleming, Stephen Hart (three cycles), Otmane Ibrir (two), Tony Taylor (two), Bert Goldberger (three), and Brian Hughes (two).
The next CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship and FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 will feature players born 2000 or later. Already in recent years, Canada Soccer’s men’s national youth program has featured more than 150 different players in that age category through regional identification and national camps.
