St. Margaret’s Bay to Welcome Some 150 Young Sailors from the Atlantic at 2021 Sail East
Competitions will be held July 23-25
St. Margaret’s Bay, July 21, 2021 – St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S., will play host to approximately 150 young sailors from the Atlantic area, July 23-25, as they will be taking part in the 2021 Sail East competition.
Held by the St. Margaret Sailing Club simultaneously with the Bay Wind Regatta, 2021 Sail East is part of a series of three Regional Championships that are overseen by Sail Canada, which also includes an event in the Pacific area and another in Central Canada.
These three regional championships are attended by:
-U15 sailors in the Optimist class;
-U17 sailors in the Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420 and 29er classes;
-Open class sailors in Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420, 29er and Optimist classes.
These competitions provide a chance for sailors to train and compete with high-level sailors in their region, in addition to serving as talent identification opportunities for regional and provincial sailing teams, as development and mentoring opportunities for coaches, as well as training and development opportunities for officials and volunteers.
Following a Sail East Training Clinic to be offered on Friday, July 23, races will be held Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25 starting at 11am (local time).

First national competition since August 2019
To ensure the safety of the sailors who will be taking part in the competition, the event will be held in accordance with the public health and social measures that are in place. Sail East competition usually involves athletes from Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
The 2021 Sail East competition will be Sail Canada’s first Regional and/or National Championship event to be held since the Canadian Senior Championships took place in August of 2019.
Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s two other Regional Championships, Sail West and Sail Central, had to be cancelled.
