SQUASH CANADA NAMES TEAM FOR 2016 WOMEN’S WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Squash Canada – Team Canada has been named for the upcoming World Squash Federation Women’s World Team Championships, taking place November 27 – December 3, 2016 in Paris, France. 

 

 

Reigning Canadian champion Hollie Naughton and Nikki Todd secured their spots on the team based on their national title and rankings on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour, respectively. The remaining two positions and reserve were determined through a detailed selection process, culminating in a Team Trials event that concluded on September 29th at the Windsor Squash and Fitness Club in Windsor, Ontario. 

 

Five athletes competed in a final stage round-robin event, facing off against each other over the four days of the Trials:  Sam Cornett, Danielle Letourneau, Nicole Bunyan of Victoria, BC, Jackie Moss of Calgary, AB, and Micaala Seth of Fergus, ON.

 

Samantha Cornett would take her spot alongside 2015 Pan Am Games silver medalist teammates Naughton and Todd, by winning the week-long team trial event, going 4-0.  Cornett has battled back to competition form after a year long injury hiatus and most recently making it to the semi-finals of the 2016 Nash Cup (a PSA world tour event) – her first tournament back from injury.

 

Coming off her second-ever PSA win at the $10K 2016 Nash Cup, Danielle Letourneau secured her spot on the team finishing the trials with a 3-1 record, her only loss coming to Cornett in her final match of the round robin.  

 

Nicole Bunyan will be the team’s non-travelling reserve after finishing 3rd behind Cornett and Letourneau at the trials.

 

“Following some strong performances from both Sam and Danielle this week, they now join Hollie and Nikki as Team Canada’s entry to the World Teams Championship in Paris,” said Women’s National Coach, Graeme Williams.  “I am looking forward to working hard with all the players over the next few months as we prepare for worlds.  The Women’s World Team Championships offers us the chance to compete against the best players in the world and to try and better the 11th place finished achieved two years ago on home soil, and where we were the youngest team.  With this line up I am confident we can do that.”

 

Under the guidance and direction of Williams, the team will spend the next few months preparing for their trip to France where they will join the top 16 nations competing for the world title.
