Sport Calgary – CALGARY, Alberta — Sport Calgary is pleased that Calgary retained its ranking as the fifth “most livable” city in the world, according to the Economist’s annual livability index.

“It is important to recognize that sport and sport infrastructure directly in influence over half the ranking criteria for the Economist’s livability index,” said Murray Sigler, Sport Calgary CEO. “Calgary’s enlightened Civic Sport Policy and ongoing investments in sport infrastructure have helped create a modern, world-class city that promotes both physical and economic well-being.”

It is often forgotten that sport investment serves as an essential element of investment attraction and retention, and this is especially true in tough economic times. Not only does sport investment lead to healthy citizens, it also generates economic benefits.

Sport Calgary commends Calgary City Council and city administration for their commitment to progressive policies and to funding community sport infrastructure investments, as these decisions are critical for Calgary in retaining its place among the world’s top cities. Over 380,000 Calgarians are currently registered in sport with one of the more than 400 local sport organizations. Inclusive sport and wellness opportunities are vital to the quality of life for all Calgarians.

Thanks to the long-term vision of our city leadership, major new community facilities recently coming online include Shouldice Park, Calgary Tennis Centre, Remington YMCA and Great Plains. Work continues on Rocky Ridge and Seton community facilities, set to open in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Going forward, Council has an opportunity to help ensure Calgary retains its international livability ranking by addressing priorities such as an updated Civic Sport Policy, and capital investments such as an affordable multi-sport fieldhouse that is accessible to the public.

Investment in sport is essential for Calgarians, and important to Calgary’s continued success as a modern, livable city.
