Silver medal for Denommée at Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup
Gymnastics Canada – SZOMBATHELY, HUN (September 23, 2018) – Laurie Denommée of Laval, QC was Canada’s top gymnast at the Swietelsky World Challenge Cup in Artistic Gymnastics in Szombathely, Hungary this weekend, winning a silver medal on vault.
Denommée qualified for the vault final in seventh place, but had two solid passes in the final to score 13.425 points and finish on the podium. Denommée also competed in the beam final, where she finished just off the podium in fourth place. Her score of 12.450 points tied with bronze medallist Elisa Haemmerle of Austria, but Haemmerle had a higher execution score, giving her the final spot on the podium. Denommée also finished ninth in the uneven bars final, scoring 11.100 and seventh on floor with a score of 11.450.
“The best part of the competition was winning the silver medal on vault,” said Denommée following competition. “I’m going to keep working on improving my execution scores across all apparatus since that is the weakest part of my scores.”
In the men’s competition, Ryan Oehrlein (Georgetown, ON) finished seventh on rings with a score of 14.000, Wolfe Gazer (Calgary, AB) scored 13.025 points on vault to finish eighth, and Jackson Payne (Calgary, AB) finished seventh on high bar, scoring 11.200 points.
“This is my second World Cup and I came into this one with a calm mindset and more at ease than the first,” said Oehrlein. “It always makes me proud to represent Canada internationally and I learned a lot from attending these competitions and competing against all the other elite gymnasts. The highlight of this competition for me was making the ring final and finishing .150 points behind my idol (Yuri Van Gelder – Netherlands). It’s neat to finish so close to someone you’ve admired for so long.”
The 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will take place from October 25th to November 3rd in Doha, Qatar.
