Volleyball Canada – Ostrava, Czech Republic, June 24, 2018: Canada’s Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) and Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto, ON) battled but couldn’t beat home favourites Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova today at the Ostrava four-star stop on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. The final result was 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-13).

In front of the packed stands at centre court, Hermannova and Slukova trailed in the first set of the final as the Canadians were in control and took the lead. In the second, the Czechs took the momentum and tied the match. Hermannova and Slukova continued to dominate in the tie-breaker, even as Bansley and Wilkerson made a last-ditch comeback toward the end of the set.

This is the second gold and overall fourth medal for the Czech pair on the World Tour, but each of the two players has previously had first place finishes with different partners.

The silver medal for Bansley and Wilkerson was the team’s second consecutive podium finish after the third place at Itapema (Brazil) last month. This is Bansley’s eighth World Tour medal, but she still looking to add gold to that collection.

The bronze medal went to Germany’s Karla Borger and Margareta Kozuch, a team that Bansley and Wilkerson beat earlier in the day in the semi-finals 2-1 (18-21, 22-20, 15-12).

“We are just really focused,” Bansley said to FIVB.com after the semi. “All the finalists are strong teams, so we are really focused on our side and on getting better – what we can control.”
