Speed Skating Canada – Montreal, June 12, 2018 – National Development Short Track Speed Skating Team member since the 2014-2015 season, Samuel Bélanger-Marceau from Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, QC, announced his retirement from competition.

Bélanger-Marceau, age 26, represented Canada on the international stage at two ISU World Cups, in Salt Lake City and in Montreal in the fall of 2014, as well as at the 2013 Winter Universiade in Italy. He also took part in the Olympic Trials for the 2014 and 2018 Games.

“I think I reached my full potential on the national team,” said Samuel Bélanger-Marceau. “It was then time for me to turn the page and move on to another project.”

“On behalf of Speed Skating Canada, I would like to congratulate Samuel Bélanger-Marceau on his performances on the ice and also thank him for his contribution to the sport with his many initiatives with his time as a skater representative as well as his other initiatives,” said Speed Skating Canada’s Chief Executive Officer, Susan Auch. “Congratulations again and best wishes in your next endeavour!”

The athlete, instigator, developer and director of the technical videos “Up to Speed with the National Team” admits it is hard to pick one defining moment from his career.

“I’m really proud of my journey in general. I’ve qualified on the National Team for four years, I took part in international competitions, including two World Cups and two Olympic Trials, and I was involved in my sport as an athlete representative, with the videos and other projects such as the mentorship system.”

He also took the opportunity to mention the contribution of people who helped him throughout his career.

“I would like to particularly thank the support staff members, who were around me all the way through my career. It’s because of them that I was able to reach my full potential and have so much fun in doing so.”

Samuel Bélanger-Marceau is studying in physiotherapy at McGill University, where he is finishing his master’s degree.
