U SPORTS – VICTORIA (U SPORTS) – The U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association proudly announced Sunday the organization had raised $90,703.21 for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in 2016-17, thanks to the milestone 10th edition of its annual Shoot For The Cure initiative.

The impressive amount was unveiled following the first quarter of the championship final – between the Laval Rouge et Or and McGill Martlets – of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS Women’s Final 8 at the University of Victoria’s CARSA Performance Gym. Jeff Speedy, project manager for Shoot For The Cure and head coach of the UNB Varsity Reds, presented a cheque to Jan Buehler, Team Lead Annual Giving at the Canadian Cancer Society.

An additional $31,571.76 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local or provincial organizations, bringing this season’s Shoot For The Cure overall total to $122,274.97 and the decade-long total to $1,133,558.61 since the initiative was launched in 2007-08 to raise awareness and money to fight the deadly disease.

For the sixth straight season, all 47 U SPORTS women’s hoops programs participated by holding one or numerous fundraising games or activities over the course of the campaign.

“It was another great year for the Shoot For The Cure initiative,” said Speedy. “We raised over $120,000 as a group and the Canadian Cancer Society will be receiving close to $90,000 to continue the fight against this terrible disease. I am very proud of our coaches and student athletes for their dedication again this year. Their efforts are very impressive and really show the quality of role models we have in U SPORTS Women’s Basketball.”

The money will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, after the organization merged with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) – the previous recipient of Shoot For The Cure funds – last month.
