Tennis Canada – Gatineau, February 28, 2017 – Tuesday marked the second day of main draw action at the tenth edition of the Gatineau Futures presented by the Turpin Group, National Bank Financial. Sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the tournament, which offers $25,000 U.S. in prize money, will be played until March 5 at the Sporthèque in Hull.
 
Following his first round doubles win on Monday with partner Felix Auger-Aliassime (Montreal, QC), Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON) cruised to a victory in singles play on Tuesday evening, beating qualifier Nathaniel Lammons 6-3, 6-2. The tournament’s second seed needed only 53 minutes to move past his American opponent, firing 8 aces and converting on all three of his break point opportunities. Shapovalov will play his next match on Wednesday evening against Frederik Nielsen of Denmark.
 
On Tuesday, two tournament seeds fell in the first round. In one of the first matches of the day, the Frenchman Gregoire Barrere, the fourth seed, lost in straight sets to American Ryan Shane. Later in the day, the sixth seed Eduardo Struvay, from Colombia, also lost to an American player, 27-year-old Eric Quigley. With these eliminations, the draw will open up for a number players, including Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Montrealer will play his opening singles match of the tournament on Wednesday afternoon against fellow Canadian wildcard recipient Pavel Krainik.
 
There were three other matches on Tuesday that featured Canadian players. In the morning, both Washi Gervais and Samuel Monnette lost their first round matches. Monette, another tournament wildcard recipient, also played in the final match of the day, an all-Canadian doubles matchup. After a dominant first set, Monette and partner Pavel Krainik closed out the second set against compatriots Malik Bhatnagar and Stefan Frljanic, winning 6-1, 6-4.
 
The Gatineau Futures presented by the Turpin Group, National Bank Financial is the first of three consecutive tournaments being played throughout Quebec in the months of February and March. The Gatineau event will be followed by the Sherbrooke Futures and the Drummondville National Bank Challenger.
