CCAA – Aug. 11, 2016 – For the eighth time in school history, Seneca College will host a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship.

The Seneca Sting will host the 2017 CCAA Badminton National Championships March 8-11, 2017 in Toronto. The tournament will be held at the Newnham Campus Sport Centre, a 22,085 square-foot triple gymnasium.

“With a core of dedicated and professional staff, combined with eager and capable volunteers and students, Seneca is eager to present a team effort that will showcase the CCAA Badminton National Championships, focusing on a positive student-athlete experience,” said Linda Stapleton, Director of Sport and Recreation at Seneca.

In recent seasons, Seneca’s varsity badminton program has demonstrated its commitment to excellence, capturing six CCAA medals (two gold, a silver and three bronze) in the last five years. Head coach Nouri Ghazi was also named the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2015.

The Sting most recently hosted the 2014 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship.

CCAA Badminton Convenor Jordan Richey has no doubt that Seneca will host a world-class tournament.

“The combination of tremendous leadership and support from their administration along with their excellent coaching staff and talented student-athletes makes Seneca the perfect choice to host this year’s championship,” he said.

Last February, Seneca hosted the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Badminton Championships and received accolades from coaches, student-athletes and spectators for their five-court set up on the Toronto Pan-Am sport courts.

“Seneca is a pillar of strength in collegiate sport and has a rich history in hosting both CCAA National and OCAA Provincial championships,” said Scott Gray, OCAA President.

“The administration and athletic staff are an excellent group of professionals who have always provided the best of student-athlete experiences when hosting at any level and I am confident that this event will be genuinely student focused and memorable for all.”

The 2016 CCAA Badminton National Championships were hosted by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC. Seneca’s Wenchao Shi (pictured below) won CCAA gold in Men’s Singles at the event, while Yan Zhou and Rachel Nham took home silver in Women’s Doubles.

The CCAA is a national sport organization enriching the academic experiences of student-athletes through intercollegiate sport.
