Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council – I·SPARC Seeking Host Communities for 2019/20 series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championship and Camps

Wrestling is one of several sports featured at the North American Indigenous Games in which Team BC will be seeking athletes to represent in 2020.
The 2019/20 BC Indigenous Championships & Camps will be a part of the athlete talent identification or selection processes for 2020 NAIG.

The Host Application Process is now open for First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, Friendship Centres, and other Indigenous organizations to apply to host event(s) within the 2019/20 series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps.  Successful community hosts will be awarded a Hosting Grant to help offset the majority of the event operating costs.  The Championships and Development Camps are to be held primarily in the Summer/Fall of 2019 in a variety of communities across British Columbia.

These events have been strategically established to support Indigenous athlete and coach development in sports featured in the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).  With the Halifax 2020 NAIG approaching, the series of 2019/20 BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Camps will be a primary component of the Team BC Talent Identification and/or Selection Processes for athletes to represent Team BC at the Halifax 2020 NAIG.  Information regarding the specific details of the Team BC Selection processes for each sport will be released in spring of 2019.
The Provincial Championships & Camps series are slated to include the following NAIG sports:

  • Canoe/Kayak
  • Golf
  • Soccer

The BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps are an important component of the Provincial Strategy for Indigenous Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity.  The events provide a unique opportunity for Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) athletes and coaches throughout the province to gather and compete in events that promote sport excellence while celebrating cultural unity and pride.

Committed to establishing a consistent, comprehensive Indigenous Team BC program that results in increased participation and better preparation, I·SPARC’s Team BC Work Group and Provincial Sport Committees maintain oversight of the Provincial Championships and Development Camps.
